Do Propane Fire Tables Keep You Warm?

A propane fire table can keep people comfortably warm within its immediate seating area, especially in mild, calm weather. It is usually less effective than a purpose-built patio heater for warming a large or windy space. The experience depends on burner input, flame pattern, table height, wind, seating distance, and outdoor temperature.

BTU input is not the same as heat delivered

Manufacturers rate gas appliances in BTU per hour, which describes fuel input. It does not tell you exactly how much heat reaches a person. Much of a fire table’s heat rises, and wind can carry it away. Burner design and flame distribution can make two tables with similar ratings feel different.

How to get the best warmth safely

• place seating at the manufacturer-approved distance;
• keep burner ports and ventilation openings clean;
• use only the specified depth and type of fire media;
• position the table away from strong wind while maintaining required clearances;
• use only approved wind guards and accessories; and
• keep the propane cylinder upright and inspect the hose and regulator.

Do not modify the regulator, burner, or enclosure to create a larger flame. This can cause overheating, poor combustion, fire, or carbon-monoxide hazards.

How long will a propane cylinder last?

A nominal 20-pound propane cylinder contains roughly 430,000 BTU when full. Approximate runtime is:

Runtime hours = usable cylinder BTU ÷ appliance BTU per hour.

At 50,000 BTU per hour, the simple theoretical result is about 8.6 hours. Real runtime varies with fill level, regulator behavior, temperature, and flame setting, so plan for less than the ideal calculation.

Fire table vs. patio heater

Choose a fire table for ambiance, conversation, and localized warmth. Choose a patio heater when projecting heat toward people is the primary goal. A wood fire pit may feel hotter but adds smoke, sparks, ash, fuel storage, and local burn restrictions.

Outdoor use and clearances

Use propane fire tables only in locations permitted by the listing and owner’s manual. A roofed patio is not automatically safe. Confirm overhead and side clearances, floor protection, ventilation, and cylinder placement.
