Backup & Alternative Power Solutions for Home Emergencies

Build a backup power plan around the appliances you need—not the largest wattage on a box. Compare generators, solar equipment, batteries and inverters for home outages, cabins and mobile applications. This is a broad equipment collection: individual components, accessories and complete packages serve different purposes.

Buying and planning guide

Choose how power will be supplied

For fuel-powered options, compare DuroMax portable generators with permanently installed home standby generators. For renewable charging and energy storage, explore home solar systems, mobile solar equipment and batteries. A battery stores energy; it needs a suitable charging source.

Separate output from runtime

List running loads, motor-starting requirements and how long each appliance must operate. Inverter or generator watts describe output capacity; battery watt-hours describe stored energy. Neither figure alone establishes whole-home coverage. Allow for conversion losses and charging conditions, and prioritize essential circuits if the full load exceeds your budget.

Plan the complete installation

Check voltage, frequency, connectors, battery chemistry and protection requirements across the system. An inverter, solar rack or panel is not a complete backup system by itself. Have a qualified installer assess fixed wiring and transfer equipment; never backfeed a home through a wall outlet.

Use fuel-powered equipment safely

Portable generators belong outdoors, more than 20 feet from the home, with exhaust directed away from doors, windows and vents. A garage is not a safe operating location. Follow CDC generator guidance and the exact equipment instructions. Fixed standby installations have their own siting requirements.
