Do you need to pay for added thermal mass?
Manufacturer clarification, September 14, 2026: TaLeah at Liberator confirmed to Prepper Hideout that Generation 2 can burn small wood pieces up to 1.5 inches in diameter in a standalone installation; added thermal mass is not required. She explained that “cordwood” means ordinary firewood split down to fit and that EPA testing applies only to pellets. For wood use, she says to remove the pellet hopper, pellet feed tube, and burn grate, which are pellet-only components. Follow the manufacturer’s full operating instructions and confirm the installation requirements for your property.

How should you compare wood and pellet costs?
Request delivered pellet prices locally. For firewood, include buying or collecting it, splitting it small enough, drying and storing it, and your time. Fuel from your property can still involve equipment and labor costs.
Consider how often you are available to tend the fire. Longer feeding intervals may make pellets worth paying for even when you have access to wood. Compare the intended schedule with the manufacturer’s current guidance rather than assuming unattended, all-day wood heating.
Will it lower your heating bill?
There is no verified, universal savings figure for your home. Estimate the cost of the heating actually displaced, then subtract the added fuel and maintenance expense. A payback estimate also needs the full installation cost and a credible estimate of annual use.
Ask an installer to assess your building and proposed location. Avoid assuming that a floor-area headline means every room will reach the same temperature. Likewise, combustion efficiency and heat delivered into your rooms are different measures; do not substitute a combustion percentage for whole-system heating efficiency.
