15kW Generator: Continuous Output or Peak Watts?

A 15kW generator search can lead to two different purchases: equipment rated to deliver 15 kilowatts continuously, or a portable generator advertised at 15,000 peak watts. Those are not the same operating allowance. If your loads require 15kW while running, a 15,000-watt starting rating does not establish that the generator can support them.

Start by deciding whether 15kW is a measured need, a professional load calculation or simply a number you saw in an advertisement. That distinction can change the entire shortlist.

Translate kilowatts without changing the rating type

One kilowatt equals 1,000 watts, so 15kW equals 15,000W. The conversion does not turn a surge rating into continuous output. Record the manufacturer's exact rating type beside every number you compare.

Use continuous or running output for the loads that remain on. Evaluate starting demands separately for motors and other equipment. A system that can briefly start a load may still be unable to carry the combined running demand.

A current 15,000-peak-watt example

The DuroMax XP15000HX+ is listed at 15,000 peak watts and 12,000 running watts on gasoline. Its propane ratings are 14,250 peak and 11,400 running watts. It is therefore not a 15kW continuous-output generator on either of those fuels.

The plus sign is part of the model name. Do not apply these figures automatically to an older XP15000HX or to an HXT or HXT+ model. Our DuroMax model-suffix comparison addresses those separate identities.

Check the connection between the generator and the loads

A generator's total output rating is not a promise that every receptacle or home connection can carry that amount. The path includes the selected outlet, cable, inlet, transfer equipment and distribution system.

For a simplified arithmetic example, 240V multiplied by 50A equals 12,000 volt-amperes. For a unity-power-factor load that corresponds to 12kW, not 15kW. This is an illustration, not permission to load a particular circuit to that level or a conductor-sizing instruction. Actual limits depend on the approved equipment, installation and loads.

Have a licensed electrician evaluate the complete connection. Do not try to combine outlets or improvise adapters to recover capacity that a single home connection cannot carry.

Rebuild the load list before buying larger equipment

List essential running loads, starting requirements and loads that can be managed separately. Distinguish electrical input from heating output on appliance labels. Ask a professional to resolve uncertain motor starting and simultaneous demand.

Consider whether the plan truly requires 15kW at once. Sequencing nonessential loads may change the requirement, but it must be an intentional and practical operating plan. Do not assume someone will remember an undocumented sequence during a stressful outage.

Compare fuels and operating conditions consistently

Use the rating for the fuel you will actually supply. A gasoline headline does not describe propane or natural-gas operation automatically. Follow the exact manual's requirements for fuel supply and any applicable altitude or temperature adjustments.

If the project requires automatic standby operation rather than attended portable-generator use, compare that as a separate system. Our home standby generators and portable generators serve different installation and operating workflows.

Keep safety requirements in the budget

Never backfeed a home through an improvised cord or wall receptacle. Use professionally designed transfer equipment and follow the exact generator's grounding and bonding requirements.

Operate a portable generator outdoors only, at least 20 feet from the home, with exhaust directed away from the home and other buildings. Never run it in a garage or other enclosed space. Keep working carbon-monoxide alarms inside. A larger power rating does not make unsafe placement acceptable.

Ask for the rating in writing

A useful quote identifies the exact model, fuel-specific running and starting ratings, connection capacity, load plan and installation scope. Buy against that complete specification. If your verified need is 15kW continuously, keep searching until the selected system meets that requirement under its intended conditions.
