Will an Ozone Machine Remove Dog Urine Odor? What to Know First

An ozone generator may temporarily change or mask the smell of dog urine, but it is not the first or most reliable solution. Urine odor comes from contamination in carpet, padding, subfloor, grout, wood, or furnishings. If that source remains, the smell often returns. Ozone is also a respiratory irritant and should not be used casually in occupied homes.

Find and remove the contamination

Use inspection, odor tracing, and—when helpful—an appropriate ultraviolet light to locate affected areas. Clean fresh urine promptly with methods suitable for the surface. Enzyme-based cleaners can help break down urine residues when used exactly as directed, but they must reach the full depth of the contamination.

Severe or repeated contamination may require removing carpet and padding, treating or replacing subfloor, cleaning grout, or sealing a restored surface with a product intended for odor control. Test cleaners in an inconspicuous area first and never mix chemicals.

Why ozone is not a substitute for cleaning

Ozone reacts with some odor-causing compounds, but effectiveness depends on concentration, contact time, humidity, air movement, and whether the gas reaches the contaminated material. It cannot remove soaked-in urine salts or damaged building materials. Ozone may also react with indoor chemicals to form irritating byproducts and can damage rubber, fabrics, plants, and other materials.

Occupancy and safety

People and animals should not breathe ozone at concentrations used for odor treatment. Follow applicable regulations and the equipment manufacturer’s instructions. A treated area may require controlled access, warning procedures, ventilation, and confirmation that ozone has dissipated before re-entry. For significant treatment, use a qualified restoration or odor-remediation professional.

A safer order of operations

1. Locate every contaminated area.
2. Remove solids and absorb fresh moisture.
3. Clean with a surface-appropriate product.
4. Remove or replace materials that cannot be restored.
5. Dry the area completely.
6. Use HEPA filtration for airborne particles where appropriate.
7. Consider specialized odor treatment only after source removal.
