Faraday NX3 Kits: Choose Bag Sizes Around Your Backup Electronics

A Faraday NX3 kit is best selected by the electronics you intend to store, not by choosing the package with the most bags. The useful questions are which devices fit, whether the closure can be completed correctly, how often the bags will be opened, and what evidence supports the shielding claims.

This guide focuses on building a household backup-electronics storage plan with Faraday Defense NX3 bags. It is a buying and organization guide, not a hands-on shielding test or a guarantee that an emergency communications system will survive every event.

What is the NX3 series?

Faraday Defense describes its NX3 bags as using three layers of nickel/copper CYBER fabric and a double-fold hook-and-loop closure. Its large three-piece kit contains Laptop, Mega, and Super Mega sizes, with stated interior dimensions of 12 × 18, 16 × 20, and 18 × 28 inches respectively.

Those dimensions help start a fit discussion, but a flat measurement is not the same as room for a thick device plus the required closure. Confirm the exact package and measurement convention before ordering. Other NX3 packages do not necessarily contain the same size assortment.

Make an inventory before comparing kits

Start with the tasks your backup electronics support: receiving information, contacting household members, accessing stored documents, lighting, or charging essential portable devices. Then list the equipment needed for each task, including compatible cables and instructions.

For each item, record its length, width, thickness, case, and sharp or projecting features. Note whether it must be immediately available or can remain in reserve. A primary phone used all day and a disconnected backup radio have different access requirements, even if both fit into a bag.

A short list of useful, maintained equipment is a better basis for purchasing than filling a large kit with miscellaneous electronics that nobody knows how to use.

Compare package sizes without assuming more is better

Check the current contents of the exact listing rather than relying on a photograph or the word “kit.” If you are comparing a backpack bundle, distinguish the carrying system from the shielding bags included inside it. Do not assume that every component has the same environmental or shielding rating.

Plan the closure allowance

Ask how the chosen bag should be loaded and closed. Do not pack a device right up to the edge and expect the closure to work around it. Think about thickness, not only face dimensions, and avoid a fit that stresses the material or requires forcing a corner through the opening.

A useful purchasing exercise is to place your equipment on a table, group the items by intended bag, and measure each group. Send those measurements to the supplier if the fit is uncertain. The aim is a configuration you can close correctly every time, not the smallest bag into which an item can be pushed.

Keep the shielding claim separate from the storage plan

A published attenuation figure needs its test conditions, frequencies, and tested configuration to be meaningful. Ask for the relevant documentation for the finished bag and closure. Do not assume that any fabric rating proves protection for every device, exposure, or packing arrangement.

Our Faraday bag testing guide covers the limits of informal phone checks. If the intended use is professional evidence handling, use the separate forensic-use procurement guide and your organization's approved procedure. A household storage plan is not a forensic validation process.

Choose a routine you can maintain

Assign each bag an inventory entry and keep the list accessible outside the enclosure. Record which device, cable, and documentation belong together. Decide who checks battery condition and stored information, following the instructions for each device and battery.

Keep spare equipment disconnected when that is the approved storage arrangement. Do not run an ordinary charging cable through a partly closed bag and assume the enclosure remains effective. Do not treat a shielding bag as a charger, battery safety container, or permission to operate equipment inside it.

Also plan what happens when the equipment comes out. A stored radio is more useful when household members already know its controls and communications plan. Shielding is only one part of preparedness; maintenance, power, and practice still matter.

The sensible NX3 purchase

Choose the kit whose size assortment fits your maintained backup inventory, then verify the closure requirements and supporting test information. Browse Faraday bags with that list in hand. Bag count is a packaging detail; correctly fitted, appropriately used storage is the actual goal.
